Criteria for surgery.

  1. A body-mass index between 35 and 39 k/m2 , with advanced comorbidity
  2. A body-mass index of 40 k/m2 , even without comorbidity , but with a negative effect of the person’s weight on their quality of life.
  3. Failure in an attempt to control weight by dieting.

Advanced comorbidity

  • High blood pressure.
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  • Type 2 diabetes.
  • Hypoventilation and breathlessness.
  • Hypertrophic osteoathropathy in weight-bearing joints.


Minor comorbidity

  • Sterility.
  • Dyslipidemia.
  • Varicose veins.
  • Gallstones.
  • Urinary incontinence.
  • Irregular menstruation.
  • Intracraneal hypertension ( cause unknown )
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
